Outreach and Evangelism
Betty's Basement was established when a parishioner, Betty Bradley, recognized a need in our community. Since then, the shop has thrived by selling very reasonably priced clothing and home goods all donated by our members and neighbors. Children are always drawn to our toys and books. At times of crisis families have been invited to come in and to take whatever they might need.
- Tuesday 2:00pm to 4:00pm
- Friday 6:30pm to 8:00pm
- Saturday 9:00am to 2:00pm
Proceeds from the sales are used to assist the church's ministries.
Grace's Kitchen is a soup kitchen which is located at Grace Episcopal Church in Plainfield. Members of The Church of the Holy Cross volunteer on the last Tuesday of every month. Members help to prepare and serve lunch to approximately 100 guests. Eight other parishes participate in this community service which has been ongoing for several decades.
Fish Food Collection
Holy Cross maintains a food collection area for the North Plainfield FISH. Canned and packaged goods can be donated. The food is taken regularly to St. Luke’s Church in North Plainfield where it is given to the needy.
Neighbors Feeding Neighbors
Fulfilling our mission to help the less fortunate and reach out into the community, our Neighbors Feeding Neighbors (NFN) program has now been serving the community for over a year. This past year we served nearly 300 meals. We averaged about 30 people at each of our 9 dinners. NFN serves a free lunch to all comers on the last Sunday of each month. The program's committee meets regularly to redefine and refine the program, endeavoring to reach as many of our neighbors as possible. Our visitors are warmly greeted and welcomed; conversation is always lively. The committee is doubling its efforts to involve more neighbors, especially children, and seniors. We are looking into working with other churches to expand NFN to a weekly program.
North Plainfield Day
Holy Cross manned a booth at North Plainfield Day in May, 2014. Our booth was one of the most well-attended and one of the liveliest. The children were especially enamored of our bean bag toss and the prizes attached. They also loved the free books. We look forward to attending future community events like this one.
In the Media
We have announcements in the local newspapers for our regularly scheduled services, as well as for special services or events.
- Participation in our Facebook page continues to grow.
- We even go "old school" to spread the good news of our ministries by distributing flyers through Betty’s Basement Thrift Shop and the Holy Cross Pre-School.
- And, of course, we make sure to give “word-of-mouth” invites to our friends, families and neighbors to join us at the events and here at church.
